Use the concept “Honoring
the Game” to teach your players ways they can honor Rules, Opponents,
Officials, Teammates and Self.
Actions always speak louder than words when trying to teach kids, whether that’s at school, at home, or games and practices. We as coaches have to lead by example if we expect our athletes to consistently strive to win while playing with honor and treating opponents with respect.
The challenge is to stay leveled headed during competition, even when calls don’t go your team’s way. Its helps to set expectations with your team early on by having talks with your team about ROOTS, an acronym that stands for Rules, Opponents, Officials, Teammates and Self. In this month’s feature, Responsible Sports and youth sports expert, Positive Coaching Alliance, share some suggestions on:
- What you can say to your players about ROOTS
- What you can do within ROOTS to set an example for your team to follow
- How using the Honoring the Game concept can help your team win on the field, and also be winners off the field too
